ENG Preserving a legacy sometimes means that children follow in their parents’ footsteps. This is what happened at the Atatürk Cultural Centre in Istanbul, work of the great Turkish architect Hayati Tabanlioglu (1927-1994) which opened in 1969 as the Palace of Culture. Decades later, in 2021, it was his son Murat who led the renovation, masterfully elevating its glass façade and interior and exterior volumes, while making his father’s imprint even more present. Housing a theatre, a cinema, a library, exhibition halls and restaurants, the building is a cultural epicentre of the city. Its large interior sphere, which contains one of the halls, is made up of thousands of handmade red ceramic tiles, evoking the tradition of ceramics and the colour of the Turkish flag.
