Y posee el título de primer lugar en el que amanece en México, en Punta Sur. En época prehispánica, era el santuario principal de Ixchel, diosa de la luna, la medicina y la fertilidad, donde las muchachas mayas peregrinaban y dejaban figurillas femeninas como ofrenda. Además, fue el hogar del pirata Fermín Mundaca, que se enamoró de una belleza local, La Trigueña, para la que levantó jar-dines, pozos y un reloj de sol en una finca que se acaba de recuperar como centro cultural. Otra sorpresa es la de la Cueva de los Tiburones Dormidos. A 20 metros de profundidad se ve un espectáculo único que no se creía posible: los tiburones (como el tigre y el mako) se acumulan en su suelo para hacer algo parecido a dor-mir, respirando gracias a las corrientes de la cueva. ENG For decades, Isla Mujeres has served as a clas-sic beach excursion from Cancún: a short ferry ride, a rented motorbike and a menu of pristine sands where the only decision is which sun lounger to sprawl out on. It also holds the distinction of being the first place in Mexico to see the sunrise, at Punta Sur. In pre-Hispanic times, it was the main sanctuary of Ixchel, goddess of the moon, medicine and fertility, where Mayan girls made pilgrimages and left female figurines as offerings. It was also home to the pirate Fermín Mundaca, who fell in love with a local beau-ty, known as La Trigueña, for whom he built gardens, wells and a sundial on an estate that has just been restored as a cultural centre. Another surprise is the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks. Twenty metres below the surface, visitors can witness a unique spectacle once thought impossible: sharks (such as tiger and mako sharks) gather on the floor to do something akin to sleeping, breathing thanks to the currents in the cave.
