A apenas media hora al norte, donde terminan los resorts y empiezan los mosquitos, aparece esta franja fina de playa y selva baja, con el Caribe a un lado y la lagu-na Chacmuchuc al otro. Una playa que aparenta ser infinita, en la que no hay todo incluido ni pulserita: lo que se estila son las cabañas discretas, los picnics y las sombrillas. El mar es de catálogo —turquesa des-lumbrante, arena blanca y fina— y el viento convier-te la zona en una pista de despegue para kitesurfistas que colorean el cielo frente a la costa. En febrero, el Festival de Papalotes llena la playa de enormes come-tas tradicionales, como si alguien hubiera decidido que aquí la única arquitectura posible es la efímera de los trozos de tela peleándose con el aire. Isla Blanca es el borrador salvaje de lo que Cancún fue antes de que emergieran los hoteles. ENG Isla Blanca may island in its name, but it is actually a strip of sand that seems determined to be Cancún’s other side of the coin. Just half an hour to the north, where the resorts end and the mosqui-toes begin, this narrow strip of beach and low jun-gle appears, with the Caribbean on one side and the Chacmuchuc lagoon on the other. A beach that seems endless, where there are no all-inclusive resorts or wristbands: instead, the style here is discreet huts, picnics and sun umbrellas. The sea is picture-perfect — dazzling turquoise, fine white sand — and the wind turns the area into a launch pad for kitesurfers who colour the sky off the coast. In February, the Papalotes Festival fills the beach with huge traditional kites, as if someone had decided that the only possible architec-ture here is the fleeting kind, made of pieces of fabric battling the air.
