La ciudad recién abierta al público a 170 kilómetros al sur de Cancún, pasó casi dos milenios entre la selva hasta que unos campesinos guiaron a los arqueólogos hasta sus cimas enterradas en los 90. La zona arqueológica número 194 de México, aún semicubierta de vegeta-ción, es la ciudad más antigua que Chichén Itzá, con pirámides de más de 40 metros de altura y 200 de base agrupadas en conjuntos triádicos al estilo Petén. Una de las piezas más fascinantes es la llama-da Aguada de los Cocodrilos: un reservorio de 80 metros de lado y cinco de profundidad, tallado y estabilizado para evitar filtraciones y erosión. Es una obra de ingeniería hidráulica destinada a asegu-rar agua durante todo el año en una ciudad sin ríos. Hoy lo siguen usando los cocodrilos, que remueven los sedimentos y han ayudado a mantenerla funcio-nal. Así de sorprendente es esta ciudad de la que no habíamos oído hablar, que comparte una novedad ancestral con el Tren Maya, que acerca a los visitan-tes hasta Bacalar, a 40 kilómetros. Recently opened to the public and 170 kilo-metres south of Cancún, the city spent almost two millennia hidden in the jungle until farmers guid-ed archaeologists to its buried summits in the 1990s. Mexico’s 194th archaeological site, still partially-cov-ered by vegetation, is older than Chichén Itzá, with pyr-amids over 40 metres high and 200 metres wide at the base, grouped in triadic complexes in the Petén style. One of the most fascinating pieces is the so-called Aguada de los Cocodrilos (Crocodile Watering Hole): a reservoir 80 metres wide and five metres deep, carved out and stabilised to prevent seepage and ero-sion. It is a feat of hydraulic engineering designed to ensure water throughout the year in a city without rivers. Today, it is still used by crocodiles, stirring up the sediment and helping to keep it functional.
