// ENG By mid 20th century Rietveld had turned his country into a world leader in architecture and design, paving the way for contemporary geniuses like Marcel Wanders, who have made Amsterdam a creative hub. In 2014, Amsterdam’s largest modern art centre, the Stedelijk Museum, held its most visited exhibition. It did not include works by Vincent van Gogh, Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Matisse or Warhol, but by Marcel Wanders, the most impor-tant designer and interior decorator in the past decade in the Netherlands. Known as the ‘Lady Gaga of world design’, together with names like Maarten Baas, Hella Jongerius and Richard Hutten, he leads one of the large industries of the Netherlands, which employs 6.5% of the working popula-tion, about 150,000 people. ‘In China they might have better machines to produce furniture and objects, but here we have more hands; everything is crafted’, affirms Wanders. In 2001 he created his brand Moooi (in Dutch it means ‘very beauti-ful’), which produces furniture and products that decorate the best hotels and homes in the world, and has a turnover of €10 million. It is only the peak of a sector that has shaken up districts like Jordaan, dedicated to these creators’ busi-nesses and studies, where design filters into everyday life. As Wanders says, ‘I would like to create furniture that was close to tradition and modernity, which parents could pass down to their children’. He has already achieved his goal.
