This year, Theaster Gates has created Black Chapel. The American artist Theaster Gates has been commissioned to design Black Chapel, which houses an exhibition of seven paintings, along the lines of Mark Rothko’s famous 1965 octagonal chapel in Houston (Texas). This temporary installation will be open in Kensington Gardens until 16th October, and Gates wants visitors to use it as a space for contemplation and gathering. A central oculus is the single source of light, creating a sense of sanctuary in the heart of London, and it will be hosting concerts, recitals, workshops and even tea ceremonies over the coming weeks. serpentinegalleries.org
