ENG The spring equinox on 20 March is celebrated enthusiastically in the small Ecuadorian town of San Antonio de Pichincha, just 30 kilo-metres from the capital of Quito. They call this The Middle of the World, in other words, where the latitude is zero. So, when this special time comes around, the town’s inhabitants celebrate with a huge fire and ancestral rituals the fact that day and night are practically the same length all over the planet and the sun is fully aligned with the equator. A great monument in the town centre records the date, but people who want to continue exploring more of this beautiful region will have to climb the hill of Catequilla, or “seat of the moon”, where the true geo-graphical equator is located according to pre-Inca culture.
