Easter in this Granada town stands out both for the en-thusiasm of its local participants and the striking con-trasts between the processions that take place through the historic quarter and caves, merging tradition with faith. The passion and death of Jesus is depicted with remarkable realism by true masters of imagery, using carvings of a unique artistic quality that are sheltered in their temples and guarded by their Brotherhoods, or ‘Cofradías’. These groups preserve and promote a histor-ical-artistic heritage that constitutes the largest of the town’s community events. Its origins date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when, after the Catholic Monarchs took over the city, a new religious order was established that favoured the cel-ebration of Easter. There are sixteen Brotherhoods, which, as confraternities, take to the streets and squares between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. A website and a cut-ting-edge app, the only one of its kind in Andalusia, show, in real time, the location of each Brotherhood during their penitential procession. This makes it easier for us-ers to go from wherever they are to where the proces-sions are taking place at that time.
