ENG Gauchos, people of mixed Spanish and indigenous blood who lived, between the 18th and 19th centuries, on the plains of the Rio de la Plata in Uruguay (but also in Argentina and Brazil), were men and women skilled in farm work, and also in riding horses. Today, their clothing forms part of the cultural heritage, which is sustained by poetry and a cuisine based on barbecue, which is practically a religion. The Semana Criolla de Montevi-deo pays tribute to all of them this year from the 1st to the 9th of April, in one of the country’s most important events. The main activity is the Con-curso de Jineteadas, where participants ride colts to demonstrate their dressage skills. This vibrant spectacle is accompanied by live music and highlights the rural customs and folklore of the countryside. The riders are already sharpening their spurs and the barbecues are all set...
