Her abstract art was complex and ahead of its time, and she knew that few would understand it. In fact, over the course of her short life as a painter, she organised exhibitions of her figurative work only. In the ear-ly twentieth century, women artists were considered capable of copying rather than innovating. Her painting was finally shown in 1986, some 42 years after her death, and Af Klint’s legacy now forms part of the world’s most prestigious museums. The Guggenheim in Bilbao is exhibiting works by this contemporary of Kandinsky and Mondrián, who achieved modernity before many others.
